 I
am proud to call Ashe County home! I was raised
on a large family farm with parents that taught
me at a young age that hard work and faith in
God would take me anywhere I wanted to go. I
married at a young age to a wonderful man by the
name of Val Phipps. We have been blessed with
two children and three exciting grandchildren.
I can say that the High Country has been a great
place to raise my children, but as they got
older and went to college, I needed something
else to occupy my time. I have always had an
interest in real estate and have bought lots of
investment properties. So I thought I would get
my real estate licensing and see if I could make
a carrier out of it. I worked in the Blowing
Rock market for a short time and realized I
loved selling real estate, but being a native of
Ashe, I wanted to open up more opportunities for
myself. This was the beginning of Active Realty.
My husband and I were the Active Realty team for
some time. Val owned his own plumbing business
and had lots of knowledge about real estate, and
that made him a real asset to Active Realty. I
am proud to say we became respected as a
successful and professional firm. After six
years, I realized my real joy came from helping
people find their home, so I decided to sell the
business and let someone else manage the office.
Now I am back doing what I love best...selling!

advanced classes and earned designations (ABR,

 Josh Johnson is very proud to say that Ashe
County is without a doubt where he comes from
and is definitely his home. He was born just
below the mountain in Wilkes County in 1980 and
lived in Ashe County throughout his high school
years. He enjoyed growing up in a small town and
going all the way through school with the same
52 students. He left home for a short period of
time to attend college at Oral Roberts
University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While he was
there, he obtained a Bachelor's degree in
Pastoral Christian Ministries and a minor in
Business Administration. Since that time, he has
moved back to “Home Sweet Home,” Ashe County.
Josh has traveled to many different countries
and extensively throughout the United States for
work and ministry. Out of all the different
places traveled and visited he states, “There is
no where quite like Ashe County.” He loves the
people here in the High Country, the scenery,
and the way of life. There is no place he would
rather call home than right here in the
mountains of Ashe County. There truly is
something special about this place and he feels
proud to call it his home.
Josh has a strong belief in God and family, and
he feels that being born and raised here in the
High Country has strongly contributed to those
beliefs. He remembers family gatherings at the
river, going to church on Sunday morning and
coming back to a big lunch with the whole
family. He remembers the times of hunting in the
woods with his dad, the camping trips with both
his parents and sister, playing in the New River
on a hot summer day with his sister and school
friends, and even football games in the fall at
Appalachian State University. From rides on the
Blue Ridge Parkway to hikes on the Appalachian
Trail, he knows that this place has impacted his
life in many ways.
Since his return home from college, Josh has
been involved with a local marketing firm, owned
his own heavy equipment sales company, and is
currently involved with real estate. When asked
about his desire to work in real estate, he
claims that bringing buyers and sellers together
is definitely one of his stronger talents, and
that he has always been fascinated with land and
homes. After living here for the majority of his
life, he knows and understands why Ashe County
is so attractive to its full time residents who
call it “home,” as well as those who want to
move to the High Country of North Carolina. If

 In
the heart of one of the South's most beautiful
counties Ashe County is a place rich with
history and a unique blend of country charm.
Born in the Gap Civil Township from neighboring
Alleghany County, Harold Crouse is not a
stranger to the Northwest Mountains of North
Carolina.
After being the sole proprietor of the Alleghany
Motor Mart/BP station for 25 years, Harold
decided to follow his dream of becoming a
Realtor. Harold became a full time Real Estate
Broker in March 2004 with a local real estate
firm in Alleghany County. He has enjoyed being a
full time Broker ever since.
In March 2005, Harold married Linda Black
Ashley, an Ashe County native and has lived in
the Baldwin Community of Ashe County since.
Harold and Linda have four children, Ashley
Crouse, Nicky Crouse, Ryan Ashley and Renee'
Ashley.
In June 2006 Harold had the opportunity to join,
and is looking forward to working with the
professional Real Estate Team of ACTIVE Realty.
This opportunity will allow a greater way to
continue serving clients in Alleghany County and
expanding his service to Ashe, Avery and Watauga
Counties as well.

Tony
Johnson has recently come on board at Active
Realty as a new member of the team. He is a
life-long resident of Ashe County and knows the
area well. He loves the mountains and considers
Ashe County his home. He attended Appalachian
State University in Boone, NC and obtained a
master's degree in education, and he then taught
school at West Jefferson Elementary for the
following 30 years.
Tony is also an avid sportsman and loves the
great outdoors. He is a member of the Ashe
County Sporting Clay Club and the Ashe County
Wildlife Club. He has been very active in church
work and has traveled extensively, participating
in world mission outreaches.
Tony has been married to Linda Johnson for
thirty-one years and they have two grown
children, Josh and Micah. Josh is the owner and
broker-in-charge of Active Realty. Micah,
following in her parents' footsteps is a
schoolteacher in Mooresville, NC.

Crouse is the latest addition to the team at
Active Realty. For four generations her family
has enjoyed the happiness and beauty of Ashe
County. She and her husband Harold, also a
realtor at Active Realty, currently reside in
the Baldwin Community in her family’s home
place.
After the “hands on experience” of selling her
own home, Linda became interested in the process
and began her own real estate career. Her desire
to help others succeed in their real estate
needs and years of professional bookkeeping and
counseling experience allow her to focus on
assisting her clients with a vast array of
homes, subdivisions, and vacant land for
residential development.

 Hugh
was born in the beautiful country of New Zealand
and relocated to the USA in 1988, firstly to
Charleston SC, and then to Ashe County in
December 2005. The rural landscape and pastoral
views remind him of his native land down under.
He obtained his License and started his Real
Estate career in late 2006, and recently took
the opportunity to join Active Realty. The firm
goals match his own, namely to provide clients
with the best professional, prompt and personal
service, throughout Ashe, Watauga, Avery and
Alleghany Counties.
An avid sailor, Hugh was fortunate enough to
take a 2 year sabbatical and cruise the U.S.
East Coast and Bahamas with his wife and twin
sons aboard their 44' sailboat, leaving in
October 2003 and returning home to Charleston
SC, in December 2005 where they sold Yamana and
